Why is early plant vigour so important for a good soybean yield?

The early stages of soybean growth are particularly important for achieving a good crop yield. Plants that produce higher yields have healthy, strong and vigorous early vegetative growth, helping them to:

  • rapidly intercept sunlight and maximise photosynthesis
  • tolerate soil and air borne diseases
  • out-compete weeds
  • preserve soil moisture

Our soybean research programme includes further exploration of the physiological and metabolic keys to success at early stages of plant development. In particular, we are investigating the interactions between environmental stress, the impact of widely-used herbicides, and the opportunity to improve plant performance through the foliar application of targeted crop enhancement technologies at early-vegetative growth stages. Getting the best possible establishment is essential for the plant to achieve yields approaching their genetic potential.
